I get the following:
# rpm -ivh courier-authlib-0.53-1.9.i386.rpm courier-authlib-devel-0.53-1.9.i386.rpm file /usr/share/man/man1/courierlogger.1.gz from install of courier-authlib-0.53-1.9 conflicts with file from package courier-0.47-1.9
so, doesn't rpm have an option to --force it to install? its not the end of the world if you overwrite some man pages in the process. The real guts of the new authlib as well as the config files for it shouldn't collide with the old courier.

Sure I can force it. However, Sam's RPM packages have always been totally
smooth in the past. I was expecting an rpm -U to do the authlib migration
(however it also fails). Also, I'm not sure if the man page conflict is
just the tip of the iceberg (ie-Does RPM just exit on the first problem
encountered? Or does it show all conflicts?).
rpm -U will work provided that you upgrade both courier-authlib, and courier
RPMs at the same time.
What you need to do, if you want to do anything by the book:
A) Build courier-authlib on a test system.
B) Install courier-authlib on a test system.
C) Build courier on the test system.
D) You now have all the RPMs you will need. After installing the courier RPMs on the test system, and kicking the tires a little bit, you can go ahead and dump them into production.
A well-organized, well-managed production platform should always have a test
system where new software gets built and tested.
Just wondering if anyone else has jumped through this hoop before.
I'm aware of this conflict and this is the only one that occurs if you do it
your way. Forcing an install is safe, but again, I recommend the approach
outlined above.
Sam, thanks for the answer. I know you are a busy man and I appreciate it. Unfortunately, we are not a well-organized or well-managed business and I don't have a test platform. I own a very small business and IT concerns are one of my many duties and I openly admit that I don't do them by the book or at most times very well at all. I have paid for it at times with a few hours of down time (including our phone system) until I can manage to unscrew what I have screwed up. But, enough of my confession. What I really want to say is that I appreciate your typically smooth upgrades and installs as well as the ease of operation of courier in general. Thanks to you and everyone who contributes to courier for such a quality piece of software.
