I understand this is a security/safety measure, but I have no way to get the list owners to fix whatever problem they have (which is not indicated in the error message anyway). Is there a way to turn this checking off?

If those messages are coming from specific IP addresses only, use the smtpaccess file to set the BOFHBADMIME variable, as described in the courier man page.
