Squirrelmail 1.2 was not a very good IMAP client as I recall. Not to mention that there are multiple vulnerabilities left unpatched in the source. Strongly recommend you move up to the latest 1.4.4 release, it's considerably faster with UID support and server side sort support and it's likely your bug will vanish.
