You can, in the sense that this option does what it says it does.
However, that doesn't mean that doing what it does will actually work, in any particular situation.
So in imapd i have: TCPDOPTS="-nodnslookup -noidentlookup -user=vmail"
imaplogin needs to have root privileges in order to connect to authdaemon, therefore using -user to drop root privileges will break everything.
The -user option is used, for example, for using couriertcpd to start esmtpd, because esmtpd doesn't need root privileges. But imaplogin does.
