Agreed. It's also handy to have multiple command threads when you want to do something like run a Search and do other email things while that's running, for example.
What's curious is that I had already set MAXDAEMONS=40 in the IMAP configuration file for Courier. And I was still experiencing problems.
Thunderbird recently seemed to forget that I set the threads down to 1 (it was reset to the default 5) and I started seeing problems again. Which went away which I changed it back to 1.
So there's something going on. I suspect Thunderbird at this point. However, I should do some packet captures to see what's really happening.
I don't remember the beginning of this thread, but this sounds like the standard MAXPERIP problem. Courier defaults to 4, while Thunderbird defaults to 5. You need to have the Thunderbird setting <= the Courier setting. Grep for MAXPERIP in /etc/courier and you can see what's going on.
