It turns out that I got nowhere with this approach: in the error case,
the webmail.orig program wrote nothing to stdout or stderr.

Therefore, I completely rebuilt and reinstalled Courier ... and
the problem went away.  This might have been due to a spurious
courier.spec file inside of ~courier/rpm/SPECS at the time of the
original build.

At any rate, everything about webmail is now working.  Thanks for 
your help.
