What do you mean by "nicely forcing"? Do you have semi-automated
procedures, step-by-step instructions, or similar guidance for
setting up mailing lists on your server?
Just mumbling...
Well mostly we are utilizing the maxrcpts value set to 30 in bofh to
limit the number of recipients they can send to
...the headerlimit issue was invoked in similar circumstances, but
sometimes when we would not expect it to happen and thus a "cross town
bus" of an issue ;), especially since that limit is logically in there
for protection related to DoS attacks and not for limiting maximum
recipients.
With that maxrcpt limit in place, productizing a broadcast/announcement
list service, and making the limit known to customers when they sign
up...is our way of nicely forcing them to use list software. The main
reason for doing this is to help the orgs and us to:
-Reduce server load as many people that manage their own lists via
address books send to bad email addresses over and over and over
-Allow standard and simple subscribe and unsubscribe mechanisms
-Make sure our customers and our servers do not get labelled, by making
them aware of what sending out emails to many recipients entails
-Manage their data a lot better and get some great information, where
before it was send and be bombarded by rejections
We have thought about and will probably also customize the maxrcpts
error message in the code so that it is more friendly and refers to the
list option.
...hope my mumbling back made sense :)
