Replying to myself: as far as I can see now (after realizing the real changes were in the rfc1035 directory), I can say my first impression was completelly wrong.
I bet Sam's new code solves the problem once and for all. I will try this new code this week but I would be really surprised if there are any corner cases not covered now.
