So i realize that it is impossible to use two non-plain authentication
schemes at the same time (e.g. mysql w/ ldap, postgres etc.), but does
this also rule out the possibility of running mysql and the normal
(userdb, pam, etc) authentication schemes as well?

This'll work.

Furthermore, this entire restriction is no longer in place in the current code.
