Sorry. I should have included these with my original question:

Mac OS 10.4.2
Mail.app 2.0.3 (734)
courier-imap 3.0.8 on Linux

Thanks for the hint but no luck here. I even deleted ~/Library/Mail and
~/Library/Preferences/com.appl.mail.plist to make sure I was starting from
scratch. It still shows 0 messages in my Inbox, and the "In" mailbox I
symlinked in shows the right number of new messages but when
I click on it it goes to 0 messages and shows no messages again.

I am convinced it is something really wrong with Mail.app now though, as I
have connected it to a Cyrus IMAP server a friend runs and it is doing the
same thing. It's too bad really as I love Mail.app's integration with the
Address Book but not being able to read my Inbox is a deal breaker.

I have but Apple's support is notably poor. It's a pitty too as I am over
all pretty happy with the system being a Unix geek mostly.
