Sorry. Well, our load has calmed down, interestingly enough. It is still high (~10) but nowhere near 300 any more. But Courier IMAP performance is still abysmal and the only stat that is meaningful to me is that the NFS server is at 90%+ iowait. So it might not be Courier, however, turning it off relieves the problem, even when postifx/courier-maildrop are delivering
lots of messages to the mount.

That percentage of time in iowait normally means the hard drives aren't responding fast enough, either they just can't keep up or they're on the brink of failure. The latter has happened to me more than a few times...
