It was more complicated than that. To build it as an RPM, one of
the dependencies was to use a devel version of the auth package. I
had to install that first. After the devel version was installed,
and Courier, I installed the lastest released version of the auth
package in an attempt to get Courier working properly. That is when
I discovered the MySQL files the auth progtam needed were in the
wrong location. In my opinion, installing from an RPM just makes
the job harder - hardly nothing on the website or man pages
correlated to the locations that were installed by building from an
    RPM. It was very frustrating.

If you build packages, the authlib modules end up in their own,
        so you
should have needed to install courier-authlib and
        courier-authlib-mysql.
        Was that not the case?

A mixed rpm/non-rpm install is just begging for trouble next time you upgrade. Strongly recommend you go 100% rpm. You should have at least the following packages installed:

courier-authlib
courier-authlib-devel (not needed on production server but needed to build courier rpms)
courier-authlib-mysql
courier
courier-mysql

Get it right now or pay for it in 6 months when you log in to quickly patch that critical flaw and wind up bringing your whole server to it's knees...
