My startup scripts were put in place by the Courier rpm.  I'm not sure
why you don't have them.

My init script is running:
    /usr/sbin/authdaemond start

That is another script which runs:
    exec /usr/sbin/courierlogger -pid=/var/spool/authdaemon/pid -$1
/usr/libexec/courier-authlib/authdaemond

I hope that is helpful.  Any more detail you'll have to get from
someone who knows more about it than me.
