That's one of the benefits; but when FAM is present it also enables some additional internal improvements to the way things are handled when multiple clients are accessing the mailbox.
You might also be overlooking the fact that most modern IMAP clients are poorly designed, and open multiple connections to the same IMAP account, at the same time, for no good reason.
So, even if you THINK the multiple access situation does not apply to you, you're in for some RUDE surprise.
