What linux distro are you using anyway?

Like what, specifically? You're installing from source now, and things 
might not apply...

Seems odd installing from source would enable that...
1. "rpm -qf /etc/xinetd.d/sgi_fam" to see if anything still owns that...
2. If something does, it *may* need to be removed (the rpm), but 
replaced with one of your own doing from earlier in the thread (the 
sgi_fam file). The server line in it might also change as "make 
install" usually puts things in /usr/local...
