Simply use Debian backports of newer Courier:
echo "deb http://debian.linuxia.de/ courier-test main" >> /etc/apt/sou*ist
apt-get update;apt-get upgrade;apt-get clean
These backports were made by official courier packages maintainer, not by
anyone else.
