There's nothing stopping you from allowing your admins to trigger it, manually, if your scheduled sync is too long a delay.

You haven't given us enough information about the existing setup to be more specific.
Your other option would be to write a mail filter that does live lookups against the directories. It should be fairly straightforward with either the python or perl frameworks available. I'd even be interested in including a well-written filter with pythonfilter.
