Because you told it that /BIG/maildirs is the home directory for this
user.
Probably what you want is to set the home directory to
/BIG/maildirs/beria.kgb.ro/petre/
and leave the Maildir empty so that it will default to "Maildir".
This will result in delivery to
/BIG/maildirs/beria.kgb.ro/petre/Maildir/
with other support files left in the home directory.
