What does du report for the user's Maildir? Is anything else reading/writing to the Maildir?This system is running OpenBSD, du shows 483M. ls -1R| wc -l counts 11450 files. The only thing that writes to the Maildir is maildrop.
And what exactly reads from the maildir?
