OK, good, then you'll just need to see about updating courier-authlib and
courier.

The garbage is normal, the strings command simply looks for strings in the
binary file, some garbage is always displayed.

What is the output of these commands:

makealiases -chk
makealiases -dump

and what does the /etc/courier/aliases/forwards file look like?
