I'm not aware of any code which will drop connections based on the ident lookup results. If the problem is specific to FreeBSD (I've not seen it on Linux), then it's probably a bug. couriertcpd is probably crashing, which is why nothing is logged.

I don't have a FreeBSD box around to test. Can you attach "strace" or gdb to couriertcpd and see what happens when you connect from localhost?
