Sounds like you're getting imap and pop3 confused. imap doesn't download mail at all, but works with it on the server. Unless one explicitly deletes one or more messages, they're not ever automatically deleted. A pop3 client downloads a copy of everything and the mail is managed locally, in which case this is a concern. Courier IMAP serves imap. courierpop3d serves
pop3.
