I was a newbie once, and I know some folks on this list who would say I still am ;)... Courier and Redhat go together very nicely, virtually no command line compiling necessary. Each version compiles and creates RPMS with a simple 'rpmbuild -ta courier-whatever'. It tells you if you're missing any libraries which you can then install with apt or yum to satisfy package dependencies.
