Look in config.log for clues.

The most common reason for this, in the past, is that you do not have
zlib-devel installed, and mysql itself has a dependency on zlib.


Thanks for the quick response Sam. Found the problem in the authmysql README
(doh!):

# export CPPFLAGS="-I/usr/local/mysql/include/mysql"
# export LDFLAGS="-L/usr/local/mysql/lib/mysql/"

Now, all is right with the world...
