Nothing prevents you from running a relay on a separate box and only forward
pre-filtered mail to your courier machine.
You can then configure courier to accept mail only from your relay box with
the smtpaccess file.
It's a good idea anyway, since IMAP puts enough load to justify having
several imap front-end machines.
So, while you still take advantage of maildrop and imap, you outsource
MTA-level filtering to products which can supposedly do it better.
