Thanks for the heads up Sam.  I am somewhat staggered that the daemon didn't
feel compelled to whinge about the shortfall in such critical details!
Given it was so silent I had presumed it was using (as defaults) those
aspects of the daemons profile that were not explicitly declared in userdb,
and was fully prepared to see permissions issues being logged if some of the
paths supplied were out of its reach.

That said, I now have the POP3 running albeit with Maildir ... which
although I hadn't planned to do so, I presume would be the better (only?)
option to establish a web mail capability?  If so all I need to do is to get
postfix to write to the Maildir rather than continue using the mbox file
format.
