Can't speak for Postfix, but as far as Courier goes, you should be following the instructions in INSTALL.

That's the problem with these tutorials. Rarely do they ever tell you how to troubleshoot things.
On the other hand, had you followed the instructions in courier-authlib's INSTALL, you would've verified userid/password validation even before installing Courier-IMAP.
Start with courier-authlib's INSTALL, and read it. When you get to the point where it tells you to read README_authlib.html, read that file too.
