They could, and should. One step at a time.

No, keep it there. It helps with some text-only readers recognize URLs.Having said all that, I'm still hacking at couriermlm. You shouldn't rush, more changes to the templates are coming. Things are slightly hectic at the moment, so I have no firm timeframe that I can give you, right now.
