I meant "still works" as in the script I have does indeed work
and I can login via IMAP even with the suspect missing newline.

Sure but the idea of an example is to demonstrate the functionality
and, for me, watching the debug output in the mail log revealed all
very quickly and powerfully. OTOH to appreciate the power of the perl
script implies the end user is familiar with perl.

Once anyone has seen it in action then it's very clear and simple.
