Sam,while you're right in saying that the message comes from qmail you are not right in stating that I made something up in 'thin air'. The machine the mail was sent from is running Courier and it is also serving as a backup MX for some domains - although NOT for the domain in question. When I set this up I got a 454 TLS missing certificate:error and the solution was to set up a smarthost without TLS. However, this would send all mail to the primary mail host - and of course the mail for the non local domain (not hosted on that machine) was forwarded as well - and consequently rejected.
Now, see here, maybe there's something wrong with me, but I just cannot follow this. You're juggling here a bunch of different domains, but rather that identifying them, showing actual log entries, and posting copies of mail headers, you insist on talking in vague generalities about "some domains" and other, different, "domains in question". And I just cannot follow this narrative. About the only thing that's clear is that "454 TLS missing certificate" is not a Courier error message.
Furthermore, setting up an explicit esmtproutes for this domain only, with a /SECURITY=NONE, will not -- I repeat will NOT -- have any impact on any mail for any other domain. Really, it won't. For example, putting:
courier-mta.com: courier-mta.com/SECURITY=NONEin esmtproutes will disable TLS to my domain, and will have absolutely no impact, whatsoever, on any mail to any other domain. So, right there you've lost me.
So, that problem solved, the question remains whether it is correct that the $host variable is set to the domain of a non-local target email address (mail sent via PHP).
There is nothing called "$host variable" in Courier. Sorry, I just can't understand what your situation is, if you do not actually describe the specifics, but insist on talking in vague generalities and hiding the actual details.
You may think you know and understand what your situation is, but try to read what you wrote, and pretend that you know absolutely nothing about the problem that's being described. Do you think you can even understand what the situation is? I strongly doubt it.
