This is the Courier POP3 server, but the mail server is not using Courier to deliver mail, they probably use procmail.

Procmail's maildir implementation is broken. It does not follow the filename naming conventions for messages delivered to maildirs. This old version of the Courier POP3 server requires that maildir filename naming conventions be strictly followed.
