I'm using Debian Linux from 5 years, used Courier Debian packages from 5 years too. Two months ago I've decided to migrate to courier compiled from source because Courier Debian packages are too old!! Debug was not fully implemented and I had sporadic authentication problems with ldap. Everything is working OK now, after i compiled from source!! I would suggest you to compile courier from source. If you read Courier INSTALL file, things in Debian go straight forward. Hope this help.
