When you rebuilt the server, make sure you used the exact same configuration options that you used for the old one. For example, if the old server used the GDBM library, your rebuilt server better have been compiled to use that as well. If it was built to use the DB library instead, it would obviously not see the GDBM database files left over from your old server. And vice versa.
