Well, this has nothing to do with any changes that I made. Something's not
working right with the thread library.

According to that message, that issue should be fixed.

Configuring with the option --without-pthreads
and all works fine.

What are the implications of that configure option? performance hit??
or is a different threading model used instead?

The threading code is used only in an optional filtering module that's not even enabled by default, so there's no real impact.
