i think this is the very same problem i reported to the list on sep. 22nd.

it must have been been fixed in the courier version which is in debian
testing now, since my problems went away after the last upgrade.

i set SSL23 as recommended. you should not use ssl2, it is insecure and
obsolete, only used in handshaking as it seems.
