Only in the overquota case.
If it doesn't then how is it supposed to correctly implement that popular webmail feature "XX Mbs used of YY total" ? Maybe there are some other methods, I just missed smth in the docs?
The docs explain that all you have to do is add up the numbers in the maildirquota file.
