Most likely invalid ownership/permissions of aliasdir.

aliasdir should be owned by the Courier uid and gid and have global
read/execute permissions.

Hmm, Debian uses permissions rwxr-x--- for aliases, so I used the same permissions for aliasdir. And with the correct user and group (daemon), it worked. What’s the reason for giving read and execute permissions for aliasdir to everyone?

I just checked my perms, but, true, you don't really need them.

Actually I just realized -- if localmailfilter is enabled, world r+x is required in order for esmtpd to access .mailfilters
