I don't get why your courier should use "asd.com" or "1.1.1.1" as MX server
for al-mahara.com. Can you explain how you got that to happen?

I get this:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~ $ host -t mx al-mahara.com
al-mahara.com mail is handled by 0 al-mahara.com.
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~ $ telnet al-mahara.com 25

So STARTTLS seems to work for the correct MX of al-mahara.com. I cannot
reproduce your problem from here.

If some third-party-server does announce TLS and is unable to handle TLS
connections when you use it, it's heavily misconfigured. Yes, you should set
an exception and tell the remote administrator to fix this.
