That's exactly what happened to us last week. As I migrated more and more 
users from our old system to courier imap, the server quickly maxed out - 
mostlty thanks to thunderbird and the default concurrent connection count of 
5. I temporarily fixed it by setting it to 2x the number of users.

Same as you, attacks are not a big concern in our infrastructure - although 
it's a point that I'll keep in mind.
