You are referring to a different kind of a "return receipt", one that's implemented by individual mail clients and is, generally, considered a security vulnerability or an invasion of one's privacy.

And that's exactly the return receipt that I was referring to. This is an ordinary extension option to SMTP. See RFC 3461.

Your sending mail client should simply set the NOTIFY=SUCCESS,FAILURE,DELAY parameter to the SMTP "MAIL FROM:" command, and Courier will either send a notification when it forwards mail to another mail server that does not implement DSN, or forward the option to the remote mail server if it supports DSNs, in which case your ultimate receipt will be the remote mail server's responsibility.
