First, determine that this error gets reported consistently. It is reported consistently when I use Thunderbird to send mail, enabling the "TLS" option in the smtp server configuration. If I use "SSL" instead, I don't get the error. I'm also not able to reproduce the problem using openssl's "s_client".Then, in a test environment, substitute a self-signed cert for your real cert, and see what happens. This server is using a self-signed cert:
I duplicated this configuration, but I cannot reproduce this error. The difference between TLS and SSL is minor -- just a different protocol version number.
This narrows this down to two possibilities, as far as I can figure:1) GnuTLS is very sensitive to binary ABIs. If you upgraded gnutls libraries but did not recompile Courier against the newer GnuTLS, there may be an ABI issue.
2) This is something that occurs with only some particular version of GnuTLS. I ran my test with GnuTLS 2.6.0
