Hi,
Went to 3 Day Blinds only to find they have moved out and moved up to Walnut
Creek! I think someone was recently looking for a place to order blinds. Can
anyone recommend a company relatively close by to order blinds for my house?
Thanks!

Allied Drapery on Lincoln Avenue between Auzerais and San Carlos does any
kind of window treatment you wish including custom making plantation
shutters which we got. Randy Peters, the owner, is a licensed contractor
and is an expert at what he does. His father started the business. Call him
up and he'll come to you if you wish. You may use my name as a reference.
I used him to do all the window covering work at Valley Village for over 15
years. He custom makes draperies also.

We always use Lawrence Contract Furnishers in Campbell. They custom order all
blinds and offer highly discounted prices (cheaper than Home Depot or those
types of stores). Here's their website - http://www.lawrencecontract.com/. Ask
to speak with Debbie and tell her I sent you.

There is a great place across the street from the OSH on San Carlos.
I think it is called San Jose Blind. They install and repair. Been
there for ages so they won't move away on you.
There prices are good and the service is excellent.

Smith + Noble will also send someone to your house to do measuring and
installing if you are not so brave -- at extra cost of course, but
perhaps less costly than custom window treatments?

We highly recommend JM Wheeler for blinds or shutters. Michele Wheeler will
come to your house, bring all the samples, measure for you and then her husband
Jeff will come out and install. They are absolutely great! We've used them for
our whole house (twice...once when we bought it, and once after our house fire).

I'm a little behind on my news feeds but I just saw this from the
Mercury News on Dec 2nd.
"A 14-year-old girl was approached by a male stranger in a tan four-
door sedan near Curtner and Meridian avenues in San Jose about 2 p.m.
Monday, according to a San Jose police report.
But instead of answering his beckoning wave, police say the girl ran
away, and the suspect fled.
The incident occurred in the 1600 block of Fairwood Avenue as the teen
was walking home from Willow Glen High School."

Is there a way we can band together to start doing a neighborhood
watch program, or any other program to help aide students when they
are in trouble.

Part of the solution - for the mornings - may be to petition the school
district to shift the high school and middle school hours back, so that they
don't start (and end) so early. In the several weeks either side of the winter
solstice, the sun is barely up when 1st period (high school - I don't know
about the middle school) starts at 7:26 am.

The problem then becomes the other end of the day, sports, theater, any
extra classes are ending in the dark. Probably safer to walk to school in the
dark than to walk home

Positing a 1-hr shift, Peeriod 6 would end at 3:05 pm vice 2:05 pm - earliest
sunset at this latitude is at 4:50 pm. After-school activities and period 7
classes would be affected, yes - but the bulk of to and from school student
travel would be in better light.

I remember when attending Booksin School, back in the stone age, we had
"block parents" they had signs in their windows to let kids know it was safe to
go there in time of need. This of course presents a myriad of other problems
to work out, and maybe the need for a more updated name, but it is something
to be considered. My Mom would walk us to school the first couple of weeks

This happened to me, when I was 5 (kinder), in Castro Valley. I'm a guy.
Beckoned to the car, to give directions, he opened the door.
What I saw had me running screaming to one of the neighbors that I knew
would be home...
(We lived around the corner from a huge school K-whatever then...)
It's way important that your kid(s) know the neighbors on their walks...
Or in the neighborhood. that is are they engaged with their neighbors or is
it their Xboxes & gaming consoles... Just a suggestion, but have you met
the neighbors on their walk & are they outgoing enough to do that themselves
in an emergency?
Assuming that you've also walked with them through their route (on
weekends), you might be able to see whom's friendly (assuming safe),
assuming that they're not yet signed up for Block Parent status...
This brings to mind the WGNAer whose expert on how to put up video on the
home computer...
Incidentally, I'll be joining the Riverglen Parents, this week, for a couple
of mornings.
They'll be out handing out instructions to ALL of the parents doing drop
offs & pick ups from Riverglen ES...,
not just a few that've gotten some extra attention for blocking up the drop
off driveway by parking in it... ;-)
Tryin' to Walk the Walk...

I wouldn't have my kids trust a sign in a window these days. My sister has
always told her kids that if they get lost at a theme park or mall etc. to go
to the nearest adult female and preferably one who has kids with her but
clearly this is not an option when you're a teenager walking alone to school in
the dark. My daughter's only 5 right now. When she's old enough, she'll carry
pepper spray or similar and a cell programmed to speed dial the police. That
number by the way is: 277-8911.

Hello,
We just had Blinds 'n' Shades in a little shopping center that faces
Bascom near Dry Creek install Hunter Douglas blinds. As the person
below said, they had a very good selection and Ronny, the owner, was
extremely knowledgeable and helpful. Their delivery and installation
was also excellent. They delivered as promised! I definitely
recommend them.

Janice,
We had great results with Blinds 'n' Shades in Campbell. We went
with the Hunter Douglas product line. They had a nice selection and
great prices.
More importantly, they came to our house the next day with sample
styles and colors. They were very knowledgeable and offered up some
great suggestions.
They did the install for us also.
Overall, they delivered all of their commitments on schedule. We
will use them again in the future.

Hi Kristina,
I want to thank you so much for recommending Modern TV (Franco and
his crew) for our TV/home theater installation.
They are the absolute best! They were very knowledgeable and just so
great to work with.
I can't recommend them enough to anyone considering upgrading their
TV/sound system environment. They are willing to accommodate all
needs and budgets-- and always showing the customer extreme respect
for their choices.
Thanks again for this wonderful recommendation!

HI Nancy and All-
I can't say enough good things about Modern TV, located on Bascom.
Ask for Franco directly - he's the owner and is a fantastic guy
with amazing resources. When we bought our house, it had been
remodeled by an electrician, with lots of expensive, high-end
wiring, that we knew nothing about. Franco took the time to assess
what we had, came for meetings with the previous owner, etc, etc
until we had our plans all lined up. We ended up doing a "whole
house audio system" by Russound so that we can listen to radio, tv,
dvd, etc all on different channels in the living room, kitchen/
dining, gazebo outside, and in our jacuzzi tub in the master bath.
We also installed a home theater with our flat screen mounted on
the wall so that it looks "framed" but an mounting arm behind it
(that you can't see) so that we can angle it for when we have
superbowl parties or want to have the tv more viewable from the
kitchen. We also installed speakers in the ceiling and a
subwoofer in the wall behind the couch. Franco really took the
time to understand exactly what we were looking for (in our case,
wanting to be able to have the kids watching one thing while we
listened to another elsewhere) and worked with our previous owner
to make sure that everything went smoothly. We had some extenuating
circumstances in that our living room is faux-painted with vaulted
ceilings so it was crucial that we got the speakers in the ceiling
in exactly the right spot or else we'd have to pay someone to re-
create the painting that was already there, which would have been
virtually impossible. I also have two small children, so it was
really important to me that they got the work done quickly and
efficiently so that our routines were not upset. They did all that
and more and have since done some work in my husband's practice to
help him get satellite radio piped in for his patients during their
treatments. Again, I can't say enough great
things about them.
If you want to come by and see how they mounted our TV, the
speakers, and the cabinetry they designed to house all the
components, let me know!

Subject: [WGNA] Home Theater Installers
Hello,
I am interested in obtaining referrals for home theater installers.
We have surround sound speakers, a flat screen tv and components that
need to be installed without wires showing, the components will be
hidden away in a closet and the tv will be mounted directly on the
wall. This will require very minor remodeling for this project.
There was one referral on wgna.net/recommend for "All Things Wired"--
but I was hoping to obtain another referral or two.
If you know of anyone to use (or not use)-- please let me know. Your
advice is greatly appreciated.
Many thanks,
Nancy

I had a really interesting meeting with a landscape architect today.
She does amazing things with outdoor spaces that tend to get neglected
like side yards and turns them into places you actually might want to
be in. See her website for some pictures http://www.astridgaiser.com
She's done some lovely work.

I'll also recommend Dr. Pisacane. I had a partial and a full crown done there
in one visit and did not have to go back for any bite adjustments. He does
excellent work.

Hi,
Sorry deleted the email from someone asking about where to donate coats, then I
remembered an email from the high school. Willow Glen High is having a warm
clothes drive. Details below, I imagine you can check with the office to either
drop them off there or they will direct you to the correct drop off point.
Warm Clothing Drive – now thru 12/14
Warm clothing will be collected and donated to the Inn Vision Shelter in
downtown San Jose on 12/14. Donations can be made to W-102 or R-107.. It's
getting colder and colder as the days pass and families and individuals who
live in the cold need our warm blankets, coats, hats, gloves, mittens and
scarves. Please help someone less fortunate by donating your extra clothing to
them
