How do I check that? I'm using the courier apt package for Ubuntu, I didn't
compile it myself.

Anyone know whether Ubuntu's package provides support for TLS?

If the couriertls command got installed, then TLS was compiled. I'd be
surprised if the pre-built package does not, but that's the first thing to
check, anyway.

Ok, so I do have couriertls installed in the system, however I still get the 540 TLS not available error. So that's more confusing to me.

Then, check that TLS_CERTFILE actually exists and has correct permissions. It has to be readable by the courieresmtpd process, which runs as the courier user.
