Hi,

For sometime now I've been baffled trying to understand what's wrong with
my courier setup.

I don't see anything meaningful in the mail.log yet I know for sure that
courier is once in a while rejecting connections, even though I don't see
anything in particular that would cause that.

The reason I know this is not only I've had some people a few times tell
me that message got rejected, but also, at least twice a week I'll get
that message from lists that I'm subscribed to, saying that there have
been too many bounces and membership has been disabled. For example,

"Your membership in the mailing list ffmpeg-user has been disabled due
to excessive bounces The last bounce received from you was dated
20-Apr-2009. You will not get any more messages from this list until
you re-enable your membership. You will receive 3 more reminders like
this before your membership in the list is deleted."

Every week I'll get this from one or two lists, I'll re-enable the
membership, but it continues.

I don't think my courier has excessive connections going on.

In esmtpd I have MAXDAEMONS=75, that should be enough.

I wrote a simple perl script on a nearby server to run off crontab every
minute and try 10 connections, and I do see once in a while unable to
connect. But every single time I try to manually telnet into port 25, I
have absolutely no problems.

I don't understand how there are "excessive bounces" from mailing lists.

Can someone help me understand how to debug this problem?
What should I look for
