there are some notable items to be aware of.

thunderbird by default opens a few too many connections. You'll see
errors (get complaints from users) unless you up the default connection
limit. please use the message submission port too. Their is some
goofball thing where the smtp timeout gets reset to 29seconds in
thunderbird no matter what you do to the client. annoying as h-ll. *that
said, I've found it the most tolerable and workarounds are easy to put
in place*

Eudora blows up (yes, there are still a few users out there) when it
can't handle self signed SSL/TLS certs. (that's a eudora problem).

windows mail barfs a bit on ultra large maildir folders (e.g. > 50k
messages)

evolution (nice client) seems to go belly up with large mail accounts
(my own account has > 300 folders, and well past 500k messages in total).

Outlook? dunno. Other than the oddball desire to place imap based sent
folders locally instead of on the server....that was a non starter for me.
