Hello, currently I am testing at a customer a new setup using 5 inexpensive Sun "Fire X4100 M2" with one Dual-Core 2,2 GHz CPU and 8 GByte of memory plus hardware Raid-1 and hotfix (3 x 300 GByte 2"5 SAS drives; except for the proxy which has 76 GB drives).
I have setup following machines:
1) PostgreSQL (for authentication)
2) courier-mta (in/out bound)
running in the same time spamassassin and clamav-ng
3) courier-imap-proxy
4) courier-imap (mailbox storage)
5) internal DNS server
I have over 1800 accounts stored on 4) and the machines are nearly idle
even if I it get more then 320.000 messages a day plus more then
700.000 spams which where rejected to 95% on SMTP level.
My question is, if such machines are nearly sleeping how can I
determiner how big a machine must be?
That I can add a bunch of storage machines 4) is clear and I will need
it for my own network, but what performance do I need for the proxy?
TDWave is now the 4th project in Grmany after CologneNet, Hansenet and
M-Net which install in a WHOLE region of more then 2 million hausholds
Internet access using 100MBit FiberOptic Residential Gateways (Iskratel
SI3000) and we have to count with at least 150.000 customers.
Currently I have a backbone of 1 Gbit available and I have connected 2)
on a 1GE interface of my Router and 3) on another. The second NIC of
each Serveris then conencted to a 1/10 GE switch to which I connect N
numbers of 4) (curently only one).
1) and 4) are NOT accesible from the Internet and same for an internal
DNS server 5) which is on the switch too.
Later, I will use Servers with two 10GE NICs for 2) and 3) but currently
I do not know which.
Any suggestions about type of CPU and its speed, memory and such?
