This comes from the /var/mail directory which has following: drwxrwsr-x 3 mail man 4096 Jan 4 2009 mail
/var/mail, itself is for mbox files. Those permissions are correct for a flat directory that holds mbox files. Not maildirs.
so the default settings of the ubuntu system for this directory is the error? Should I just remove the S from all?
Yes, also, as I mentioned, look in all the subdirectories for individual files with bad or broken permissions -- that's the likely cause of your warning messages. This is a secondary issue.
