Perhaps you're running into the ident lookup.  In its default 
configuration, Courier will attempt reverse DNS lookup and a connection 
to port 113 of any host which connects on SMTP.  If the connecting host 
has a firewall that drops connections instead of refusing them, you'll 
see a very long delay before the SMTP banner.
