You most likely misconfigured Courier. You did not post the contents of your configuration files, thus leaving everyone to guess what you did, but you probably set AUTH_REQUIRED in the esmtpd configuration files, thus forcing authentication on every sender. And that's exactly what you got.

Remove AUTH_REQUIRED, then reread INSTALL, from start to finish, which tells you, step by step, what needs to be configured.
