Learn about DNS. The protocols like POP3 and IMAP are not host name dependant. The client uses the host name to determine an IP address (via DNS, completely independant of courier) and then contacts the IMAP server reachable on the specific IP address. Many IMAP clients are able to strip off one level of the tree, so it could look like multiple root folders in parallel. It's a client display issue, the IMAP server does not know about this.
